Anti-GMA Rally
Feb 29, 2008
Leap Year, Denver's Presentation and Anti-GMA rally.
The Fulbrighters commuted to Makati so we could all see Denver's end of grant presentation. Apparently in addition to leap year, that day was also a scheduled Anti-gloria rally (Philippine President) As a representative from the U.S. government, we're technically allowed to participate in any political rallies. Fortunately however, I snagged some shots of the crowds pouring through the streets from the skywalk above. I have a not-so-secret hatred of Makati and its skyscrapers. It's too clean in comparison to the rest of the city and an ill representation of the Filipino people (i think) Ayala Ave is just one mall after another and it's difficult to get to the PAEF building without going through at least four malls. Commercialism at its worst and most annoying. That day was different however. It reminds me that this country once fought for freedom and that there are people who see past the corporate monopolies that dominate the city. News reports said that about 15,000 people joined the rally, but reports on ground estimated it at 80,000. Did the rally accomplish anything? It depends on your point of view.
